Actual TV body and stand dimensions

Manufacturer-listed US BRAVIA 3 examples, checked October 6, 2026. These include the frame; the screen chart above uses calculated picture geometry. This is a measurement reference, not a ranking.

Original millimeter values are retained, including Sony's 1675 mm body width versus 1676 mm with stand for the 75-inch model. Some rounded inch figures on the source differ from its metric figures; our conversions use the stated metric values. Stand width is foot spacing, while assembled depth includes the stand.

Allow ventilation space as well

Sony's supplied safety guide (page 6, English) shows, for installation with a stand, at least 30 cm above, 10 cm at each side and 6 cm behind the set. These are additional air gaps, not body dimensions. Keep vents unobstructed. Wall mounting has a different diagram and conditions: use the exact regional manual and bracket instructions.

Choose a screen that works in your room.

A useful comparison starts with three things: the visible picture, the complete TV, and your normal seat. Each tells you something different about the fit.

The label runs corner to corner.

A TV’s advertised inches describe its diagonal. They do not describe its width. Our chart assumes a 16:9 screen and treats the selected diagonal as exact. A model sold as “65-inch class” can have a slightly different visible diagonal, so its specification sheet may differ from the calculation.

For an exact 65-inch diagonal, the picture is 56.7 inches wide and 31.9 inches high, or 143.9 × 80.9 cm. That is the visible screen alone. It is a starting rectangle for planning, not the outside dimensions of every 65-inch TV.

Check the installation you’ll use.

On furniture, look up the assembled width, height, and depth with the stand attached. Check the feet or pedestal footprint against the support surface, then confirm the furniture’s weight capacity. Foot spacing and depth cannot be calculated from the screen diagonal.

On a wall, use the body dimensions without the stand. Check the TV and bracket manuals for mounting compatibility, cable access, and ventilation space. A recess that matches the body exactly may still be unsuitable. Required clearances are model-specific, so adding an arbitrary gap does not establish a safe fit.

55 or 65 inches, from the same seat?

At 8 feet from the screen, the 55-inch picture spans 28.0° horizontally. The 65-inch picture spans 32.9°. The larger option adds 8.7 inches of screen width and 39.7% more picture area. That area increase does not mean more pixels or better picture quality.

Keep the viewing distance fixed when comparing. Moving your seat changes the apparent size, even with the same TV. These angles describe geometry, not a guarantee of comfort. Your content and preference still matter.

Try the outline in your own room.

Use removable tape suitable for your wall to outline the calculated screen width and height. Sit where you normally watch, including any side seats, and check the view. Keep nearby shelves, speakers, doors, and other room features in mind. A paper rectangle can work where tape is unsuitable.

Then mark the chosen model’s complete body dimensions separately. This second outline answers a different question: whether the physical TV has space. Add only the clearances required by its documentation. The on-screen showroom helps compare proportions, but its illustrative room cannot replace this check.

Use the measuring checklist ↗

A few questions before you choose.

Can I use screen width to choose a cabinet?

Use it to narrow your options, then check the exact TV’s body width, stand footprint, assembled height, and weight. Screen width alone cannot confirm the furniture is suitable.

Does a larger diagonal mean a proportionally larger picture?

At the same aspect ratio, screen area changes with the square of the diagonal. Here, 65 ÷ 55 increases the diagonal by 18.2%, but the picture area increases by 39.7%.

Where should I measure viewing distance from?

Measure from your seated eye position to the screen plane. Measuring from the sofa’s front edge to the wall can give a different distance and therefore a different viewing angle.
