Will a 48-inch TV fit?

Start with the 41.8-inch screen width (106.3 cm). That is the picture area, so a space exactly this wide is not enough to confirm a fit. The frame adds width, and a manufacturer may use a slightly different actual diagonal for a TV sold in the 48-inch class. Use the full model dimensions before choosing furniture or a wall recess.

The screen itself is 23.5 inches tall (59.8 cm). A tabletop installation also needs room for the stand. Check the assembled height, foot spacing, stand depth and furniture weight limit separately. For a wall installation, allow for the bracket, cable connections and the ventilation clearances specified in the TV manual.

How large will it look?

For this screen, a seat about 6.5 feet away produces a 30° horizontal viewing angle. Moving to about 4.8 feet increases that angle to 40°, so more of your field of view is filled by the picture. These are geometry examples, not a universal comfort recommendation. Your eyesight, content and preference still matter.

Measure from your normal eye position to the screen plane, rather than from the front of the sofa to the wall. Try the room preview to explore viewing distance, and use tape to outline a 41.8 by 23.5-inch rectangle in your own space.

Before choosing this size

Moving from 48 to 50 inches adds 8.5% more screen area. The 50-inch screen is 1.7 inches wider, which is often the more useful number when checking a cabinet. Compare at the same scale, then confirm the exact model’s specifications.

All figures here are calculated from an exact 48-inch diagonal and a 16:9 rectangle, rounded for display. Sizes vary by model. Always confirm with the manufacturer's spec sheet before buying. See how we calculate screen dimensions.

Check depth before replacing a smaller TV

An existing cabinet that held a smaller TV may still be unsuitable for a different stand design. Measure usable depth, foot contact positions, and the route for power and signal cables. A diagonal increase does not predict any of those dimensions.

A 48-inch screen at two distances

6 ft (1.83 m)

32.4° horizontal viewing angle

8 ft (2.44 m)

24.6° horizontal viewing angle

These distances are worked examples, not recommended limits. Both use the same 41.8 by 23.5-inch screen. Only the eye-to-screen distance changes. Move between those positions when checking a physical outline to see the difference for yourself.

For furniture, record the support width, depth, and load rating. For a wall, record the body size and the manufacturer’s mounting and ventilation requirements. Keep those checks separate from the viewing-angle result.
