How to measure
for a TV.

Measure the space for the whole TV, then measure from your seat to the screen. A diagonal alone cannot confirm the fit.

Screen diagonalBody widthBody heightStand dimensions depend on the model
The diagonal describes the visible screen. Body dimensions and the stand footprint are separate measurements.

Start with the space you have.

Use a tape measure and record your measurements in one unit. For an opening, check width and height at more than one point. Use the narrowest usable measurement if the sides are uneven.

  • Note shelves, trim, cabinet doors, sockets, and cable access.
  • For furniture, measure the usable support width and depth.
  • Record the furniture’s load rating from its documentation.

Do not fill the entire opening on paper. The TV’s manual may require space for ventilation, connectors, and access. The amount depends on the model.

Check the TV you will actually install.

Find the exact model number, including its regional suffix. Open the manufacturer’s specification sheet and installation manual. A size class can differ from the actual visible diagonal, and TVs with the same diagonal can have different bodies or feet.

On a cabinet

Use the assembled height and depth with the stand attached. Check that the full foot or pedestal footprint is supported. Allow for other equipment, such as a soundbar.

On a wall

Use body dimensions without the stand. Verify mount compatibility, load capacity, cable routing, and the clearances in the TV and bracket instructions.

Mark the calculated screen rectangle with removable tape suitable for your wall. Then mark the complete model’s body separately. The first helps you judge the picture. The second helps you check physical space.

Measure from your seated eyes.

Eyes to screenYour usual seatScreen plane
Measure to the intended screen plane. The front edge of the sofa and the wall behind the TV are different reference points.

Sit where you normally watch and measure from your eye position to the screen. Check other seats you use as well. Enter that distance in the showroom to compare apparent sizes.

Also note your seated eye height and check how the screen relates to furniture, speakers, and room features. The mount’s holes may not align with the screen center. Use the TV and bracket instructions to locate mounting hardware.

The showroom calculates screen dimensions and viewing angle. Its room is illustrative, so use your own measurements to establish clearances.

Try your viewing distance ↗

Plan the route, not only the final position.

Get the packaged width, height, and depth before checking doorways, stairs, elevators, and hallway turns. A screen’s width cannot confirm whether the carton will pass through a route.

Keep unpacking space in mind and follow the manufacturer’s permitted handling orientation and lifting instructions. Ask the seller or installer about access requirements if a turn or opening is uncertain.

Keep track as you measure.
