The same screen feels larger when you sit closer. Choose a diagonal to compare two viewing angles.
What these distances mean
Viewing angle describes how much of your horizontal field of view the screen occupies. A 40° view fills more of your vision than a 30° view. Neither setting is a universal comfort rule. Try the position with the content you actually watch and choose what feels comfortable.
The calculation is screen width ÷ (2 × tan(viewing angle ÷ 2)). Width comes from a flat 16:9 screen. Measure the distance from your eyes to the center of the screen, with your seat facing it.
Resolution does not change this geometry. Source quality, eyesight, subtitles, screen height and personal preference can all affect your choice. These values are not pixel-visibility thresholds.

| Screen diagonal | 30° view | 40° view |
|---|---|---|
| 55 inches | 7.5 ft / 2.27 m | 5.5 ft / 1.67 m |
| 65 inches | 8.8 ft / 2.69 m | 6.5 ft / 1.98 m |
| 75 inches | 10.2 ft / 3.10 m | 7.5 ft / 2.28 m |
For a 65-inch screen, moving from about 8.8 feet to 6.5 feet changes the calculated horizontal view from 30° to 40°. The panel stays the same size. It simply fills more of your vision.
Common questions
Where should I measure the distance from?
Measure from your eyes in your normal seat to the center of the screen. The calculation assumes you face a flat screen directly. Measuring from the back of a sofa or the wall behind the TV gives a different distance.
Does a 4K TV need a different distance?
Resolution does not change the size or viewing-angle calculation. A pixel-visibility recommendation answers a different question. Use these angles to compare how large the picture feels, then try your usual content at the proposed position.
Is 40° better than 30°?
It gives a larger picture in your field of view, but that is a preference rather than a quality ranking. You may prefer a wider view for films and a smaller one for content that needs frequent eye movement.
