Will a 42-inch TV fit?
Start with the 36.6-inch screen width (93.0 cm). That is the picture area, so a space exactly this wide is not enough to confirm a fit. The frame adds width, and a manufacturer may use a slightly different actual diagonal for a TV sold in the 42-inch class. Use the full model dimensions before choosing furniture or a wall recess.
The screen itself is 20.6 inches tall (52.3 cm). A tabletop installation also needs room for the stand. Check the assembled height, foot spacing, stand depth and furniture weight limit separately. For a wall installation, allow for the bracket, cable connections and the ventilation clearances specified in the TV manual.
How large will it look?
For this screen, a seat about 5.7 feet away produces a 30° horizontal viewing angle. Moving to about 4.2 feet increases that angle to 40°, so more of your field of view is filled by the picture. These are geometry examples, not a universal comfort recommendation. Your eyesight, content and preference still matter.
Measure from your normal eye position to the screen plane, rather than from the front of the sofa to the wall. Try the room preview to explore viewing distance, and use tape to outline a 36.6 by 20.6-inch rectangle in your own space.
Before choosing this size
Moving from 42 to 43 inches adds 4.8% more screen area. The 43-inch screen is 0.9 inches wider, which is often the more useful number when checking a cabinet. Compare at the same scale, then confirm the exact model’s specifications.
All figures here are calculated from an exact 42-inch diagonal and a 16:9 rectangle, rounded for display. Sizes vary by model. Always confirm with the manufacturer's spec sheet before buying. See how we calculate screen dimensions.
Keep nearby sizes in perspective
When comparing 40, 42, and 43-inch options, the diagonal labels are only a first filter. Small differences in screen width can be outweighed by different bezels or stand designs. Compare the exact assembled dimensions of any models under consideration.
A 42-inch screen at two distances
41.7° horizontal viewing angle
28.5° horizontal viewing angle
These distances are worked examples, not recommended limits. Both use the same 36.6 by 20.6-inch screen. Only the eye-to-screen distance changes. Move between those positions when checking a physical outline to see the difference for yourself.
For a desk or cabinet, write down the usable support width and depth, then compare them with the model’s stand footprint. Screen height alone does not tell you the assembled height.
